Extinction

Recently published by Macmillan, Extinction is a geopolitical disaster thriller on the largest scale.

"Bigger than epic. This dazzling vision of global chaos in a future war against eco-terror, explodes off the page with the dramatic force of a smart bomb." - Daily Express

Story synopsis

By the year 2056, the problem of global warming has become so great that Humankind has been forced to deploy space technology to control the world’s climate. Instead of changing the habits of conspicuous consumption that have caused the greenhouse gas problem, the governments of the rich world have pursued a technological fix of orbiting space mirrors and sun blinds to manipulate the weather.

These techniques allow a number of giant energy corporations to sell their weather modification services to the nations of the rich world. While the USA, Europe, Australasia and selected parts of the Southern Hemisphere enjoy weather that is controlled to a tightly agreed schedule, the rest of the world suffers uncontrolled climactic conditions, including drought, monsoon and extreme humidity.

The latest development in weather control technology has been to cover 2,600 square miles on either side of the moon’s equator with over 42,000 high-luminosity, self-cleaning, self-repairing, curved solar-reflecting mirrors that can individually be directed and angled towards different sections of the earth, each by its own set of servo motors.

Meanwhile, millions of environmental refugees are forced to live on floating ‘hulk cities’ – hundreds of old, redundant oil tankers and cargo ships that are chained together to ride out the fierce storms of the Southern Ocean, the only area of living space available for these refuges. None of the developed nations are prepared to accept the millions of refugees made homeless by global warming, but Michael Fairfax, an American human-rights lawyer, is determined to fight for justice for these refugees. But before he can bring their case before the new International Court of Civil Justice in the Hague, the Earth itself begins to protest at the artificial environmental Mankind is creating.

For reasons that are not at first understood, the number of serious seismic events – earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, Tsunamis – increases dramatically and Michael Fairfax finds himself caught up in an effort to save the whole of humankind from extinction.
